The most common is the three-prong XLR3 almost universally used as a balanced audio connector for high-quality microphones and connections between equipment. XLR3 was also used to transmit MIDI data on some Octave-Plateau Voyetra including synthesizers-8. XLR4 (four pin) is used for helmets and ClearCom intercom telex and telephones, electrical connections to DC for film professionals and video cameras and older versions of AMX control lighting analog. XLR5 is the standard connector for DMX512 digital lighting control and is also used for microphones and dual element dual-channel intercom headsets. XLR6 is used for two beltpacks intercom channel.
Many other types exist, with different pin numbers. Most notable are two now obsolete models with three pins manufactured ITT Cannon. The power Cannon (also called the XLR-LNE) had shrouded pins and red insulation, it was designed as a power connector sector, but was replaced by the IEC mains connector and increasingly, more recently, the PowerCon connector developed by Neutrik.
The loudspeaker Cannon had blue or white insulation (depending on sex), was intended for connections between audio power amplifiers and speakers. At one point 3 pin XLR connectors were also used extensively on loudspeaker cables, as when it was launched, they represented a new standard in robustness, and economic alternatives were not readily available. The convention [citation needed] is that a speaker cable Two drivers had XLR3 female connectors at both ends, to distinguish a three-conductor shielded cable signal level with a female XLR3 at one end and a man XLR3 to another. Either pin 2 or 3 was live, according to the manufacturer, with pin 1 always the 'earthy' return. This usage is now both obsolete and dangerous for the equipment, but is still sometimes encountered, especially on older equipment. For example, some speakers have a built-XLR3M as an input connector. This use has been replaced in professional audio applications by Neutrik Speakon.
The XLR connectors are designed to connect first axis 1 (the ground pin), before the other pins in contact during a XLR male is introduced. With the ground connection in place before the signal lines are connected, the insertion (and removal) of the XLR connectors Live in equipment is possible without picking up external signals (as often happens, for example, RCA connectors).
Lighting control for entertainment applications is widely connected with five-pin XLR. Manufacturers like Leviton and Lightronic have even created new protocols not compatible with DMX512 using XLR three pins to control lighting devices (primarily dimmers made by the same manufacturer).
Rechargeable devices exist that use three-pin XLR connectors. These can be found on electric mobility scooters and wheelchairs. 2 connectors carry 10 amps 24 volts.

Some audio equipment manufacturers reverse the use of pin 2 (properly normal input) and pin 3 (inverting input). This reflects their own prior use before any standard existed. Pin 1 is always ground, and many connectors connect internally to the connector shell or case.
XLR and 1 / 4 "TRS combo.
Although covered in AES48-2005 and AES54-3-xxxx, it should be noted that there is a disagreement on how best to manage the use of pin 1 on both ends of a cable, especially with regard to the shield, the connector shell, signal ground, and a third cable wire connected to pin 1, which may (or may not) be connected to the screen.
XLR3M a (male) is used for output and XLR3F (female) an entry. Thus, a microphone has a connector built XLR3M and signal cables such as microphone cables will each have one end XLR3M XLR3F and to each other. Phantom power
Some microphones such that condenser microphones require power. An alternative to battery power is a phantom that consists of applied current evenly across the two signal lines of a balanced audio connector (in modern facilities, usually an XLR). The voltage is referenced to the ground pin connector (pin 1 = a XLR), which is normally connected to cable shield or a ground wire in the cable or both. When phantom power was introduced, one of its advantages is that the same type of balance, free microphone cable that studios were already using dynamic microphones can be used for microphones capacitor, and, unlike the vacuum tube microphones, which required special, multi-conductor cables of all kinds.
With power phantom power supply is effectively invisible to balanced microphones not in use: for example, most dynamic microphones. A balanced signal consists only of the voltage differences between two signal lines; phantom places the same DC voltage on both lines of a signal symmetric connection. This is in marked contrast to another approach earlier power-known as the "parallel power" or T-Power "(from German Tonaderspeisung term), in which DC was coated directly on the differential mode signal. Connecting a dynamic microphone (especially a ribbon microphone) to an entry that has the power parallel could very well severely damage the microphone, but it is not normally done with phantom power unless the cables are defective or improperly wired.

connectors XLR has been developed to give greater RF rejection. Two models have been released from Neutrik.
The CME series is a version specially designed for the XX series to give enhanced RF screening for critical applications in live performance and recording where there are particular problems with radio transmission. The design guarantees a continuous RF shield of the cable connector housing by a frame around the circular capacitor cable shield. The circular law capacitors as high-pass filter with a cutoff frequency of about 10 MHz. An EMI suppression ferrite bead 24 ohms at 1 MHz between pin 1 and the shield provides a low-pass filter for improved RF rejection.
The XCC Series cable connector with the shield contact circular offers excellent RF protection to transmit digital audio signals most efficient and reliable. The XLR features a coaxial ground spring and a key Allen crimping end coaxial cable entry for a smooth transition and reliable screen to the hull. This is designed for transmitting digital signals according to AES42.
The idea is that digitization might occur in the capsule instead of the head of a snake or mixer. The initial gain structure would then occur directly on the capsule, along other other measures such as filters.
